The Worship of Relics, the Auspiciousness of Life

A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to worship the Relics for the Year of Birth is considered an act that brings the auspiciousness to life. The Worship of Relics is widely believed by Lanna people since ancient times, combined with the Thai belief that zodiac years are tied to the fate of people. Thus, the relics are considered sacred objects related to individuals. Thailand Post has issued postage stamps depicting images of Phra That or relics continuously for three years. This year we issued postage stamps with the images of Phra Borommathat in Tak province, Phra That Doi Suthep in Chiang Mai province, Phra That Phanom in Nakhon Phanom province and Phra That Hari Phun Chai in Lamphun province.

Phra That Sri Jomthong, Chiang Mai Province: Year of the Mouse Legend has it that Asokha the Great located Phra Thaksin Moli That, in which the Buddha relics from the right side of his head are enshired.

Phra That Lampang Luang, Lampang Province: Year of the Ox The chedi that enshrines the Buddha relics was built in Year of the Ox and the construction completed in Year of the Ox. It houses relics from the right side of the Buddha's forehead and his neck, together with the hair of the Buddha.

Phra That Cho Hae, Phrae Province: Year of the Tiger The chedi of Phra That Cho Hae enshrines hair of the Buddha and relics from his left elbow. The act of worshipping Phra That Cho Hae will bring about prosperity, wealth, and happiness to the worshippers.

Phra That Chae Haeng, Nan Province: Year of the Rabbit The chedi of Phra That Chae Haeng is the house of relics of the Buddha's left wrist and his hair. In March, Hok Peng Waisa Mahathat Chae Haeng Fair is held every year to worship the relics.

Phra That Chedi Wat Phra Singh, Chiang Mai Province: Year of the Dragon Phra That Chedi Wat Phra Singh was built in 1345. The act of worshiping the relics will bring about longevity and prosperity to the worshippers.

Phra Sri Mahabodhi Bodhgaya, Wat Photharam Mahawihan, Chiang Mai Province: Year of the Snake King Tilokraja had a Bodhi tree from Lanka and commanded the construction of Satta Maha Sathan as the replica of the seven important places where Lord Buddha stayed after his Enlightenment, serving as a symbol of Lord Buddha's Enlightenment

Phra Borommathat, Tak Province: Year of the Horse Legend has it that Lord Buddha showed clemency to animals at this place, where he asked to bring his bones and hair back to the place after his death. today, a replica of the Shwe Dagon Pagoda was built over the original chedi.

Phra That Doi Suthep, Chiang Mai Province: Year of the Goat It is believed that worshiping the chedi in four directions will result in good intelligence. In the past, there was a tradition that local people walked up the mountain to Phra That Doi Suthep in order to worship the relics inside the chedi on Vesak Day.

Phra That Phanom, Nakhon Phanom Province: Year of the Monkey Legend has it that Lord Buddha showed clemency to animals at this place which belonged to the Sri Kotaboon Kingdom at that time. Later, Mahakassapa brought Phra Urangkhathat (the breastbone) of the Buddha to be enshrined for people to worship.

Phra That Hari Phun Chai, Lamphun Province: Year of the Rooster Legend has it that the Lord Buddha once came to stay at this place and make a prophecy that in the future this place would be "Hari Phun Chai Buri". The chedi housing the Buddha's relics was renovated during the reign of the King Tilokraja of Chiang Mai.

Phra That Gate Kaew Chulamanee, Wat Ketkaram, Chiang Mai Province: Year of the Dog Phra That Gate Kaew Chulamanee represents the Chulamanee Chedi in the Daowadung heaven. Lanna people believe that floating lanterns is another way to worship Chulamanee Chedi in heaven.

Phra That Sri Jomthong, Chiangmai Province: Year of the Pig The chedi enshrines the relics from Buddha's left collarbone. It is designated as Phra That of the Year of The Pig, which was the birth year of Pu Chao Lao Jok and King Mengrai, thr early ruler of Chiang Mai.
