Festival of Floral Offerings, Only One in the World
The festival of floral offerings is an important tradition that Saraburi people have carried on for a long time. People believe that the act of making floral offerings has considerable merits. According to Buddhist legend, Sumon Malakarn was responsible for collecting jasmine flowers for Bimbisara, the King of Rajgir. One day, while he was picking jasmine flowers, he saw Lord Buddha who was going on alms, leading to his sudden complete faith in the Buddha. Thus, he decided to use his jasmine flowers as an offering to Lord Buddha and prayed that everything King Bimbisara had given him was only to survive in this world, but floral offerings can make virtue both in this world and in the next one. When King Bimbisara knew what had happened, he was so satisfied that he gave a huge reward to Sumon Malakarn.
The day of floral offerings is usually on the waning day of the 8th month of every year which is the day of Buddhist Lent. Buddhists normally collect flowers of globba winitii a plant with trunks like that of lesser gingers or turmerics that yields yellow, white and purple flowers during Lent days-from the hillside and make on offering to the monks who visit Phra Mondop at Wat Phra Phutthabat to perform religious rituals so that those monks can use their flowers to worship the chedi that houses Lord Buddha's relics. This is considered an act of merit that will benefit the givers. Moreover, while the monks are stepping down from Phra Mondop, people will bring clean water to wash the monk's feet since the y believe that the water will become the purification that will wash their sins.
