Sang Thong is a folk storythat is well-known all over the country. The story also appears in the Panyas Jataka Stories and is known by the name Suvana Sang Jataka. It is popular in the South in the form of a narrative written for chanting. The story, commonly called Sang Thong or Hoy Sang, also appears in the tradintional lullaby, beliefs, folk plays and games.

The Sang Thong that is used as a literary text for young Thai students was composed in the form of the dramatic verse by King Buddha Lerdlah Naphalai. This version has also been adapted for stage performance.
