The Centenary of the Supreme Patriarch of Thailand
Somdet Phra Nyanasamvara was entitled the 19th and incumbent Supreme Patriarch of Thailand on 21st Aprilv1989 until the present day. He had a birth name of Charoen Khotchawat and dhamma name of Suvaddhano. He is a son of Mr. Noi and Mrs. Kimnoi and was born on Friday, 3rd October 1913 at Ban Nuea Sub-district, Muang District, Kanchanaburi Province. He was ordained as a Buddhist novice at the age of 14 in Devasangkaram Temple before moving to Bovoranives Temple in 1929. He the completed the highest level of Dhamma Studies and earned several posts in Thai ecclesiastic hierarchy. In 1956, he was appointed guardian and advisor to H.M. King Bhumibol Adulyadej during his royal ordination in Bovoranives Temple.
He is the first Thai monk who initiated formal and tangible missionary in overseas countries. He has been playing an active role in Buddhism evangelical movement outside Thailand. He is specialized in foreign language, especially English. He has written more than 100 books on Buddhism in both Thai and English languages. In additions, he has composed various valuable academic works, documents and Buddhism textbooks.
In celebration of the 100-year birthday of Somdet Phra Nyanasamvara, the Supreme Patriarch of Thailand, on October 3, 2013, Thailand Post has prepared two sets of commemorative stamp. The first of which has already been disseminated in 2012. The second set will depict his images in four phases of his life as painted by Mr. Theeraphan Lorpaiboon for the postage stamp design. In addition, a stanza in praise of him as written in handwriting and signed by Mr. Naowarat Pongpaiboon, a poet laureate of Thailand, has also been incorporated onto the souuvenir sheet.
