Introducing the Use of Family Names in Siam
In our past history since the Sukhothai Period, Thai people did not use family names for identification and, as a result, has caused many difficulties. In this respect, King Rama Vi has initiated the use of given names and family names for Thai people by enacting the Family Name Act of 1913 in order to determine to description and ancestry of the persons as well as the ability to prepare to register of birth, marriage and death as evidence. It is now 100 years that Thai people had family names in use and in order to extol and appreciate the mercy of King Rama VI, the postage stamp has been prepared by incorporating the said Act in the design.
