The country's military affairs started at the birth of the nation. In the reign of King Chulalongkorn, the military system was re-organized at royal behest on the same lines as the civilized countries. On April 8th, 1887 the King had the Army and Navy combined to form the Department of Armed Forces, coming under the administration of Somdetch Chao Fa Maha Vajiroonhis. On April 1st, 1890, its status was elevated to that of ministry and the reign of King Vajiravudh, its name was changed to the Ministry of Defence. The Ministry of Defence is mainly responsible for protecting the country, increasing its military capacity and defending the country's wealth. It also aims at creating coorperation with neighbouring countries, especially ASEAN countries, to alleviate threats and and promote peace. Its responsibility extends to safeguarding the institution of monarchy since the King is Head of State and the Supreme Commander of Thai Armed Forces. It also supports work initiated and demanded by the King.
