The SUPPORT Foundation was established by Her Majesty the Queen on July 21st, 1976 with the main objective of helping deprived farners, who constitue the majority of the population of the country. They earn a small income because of problems that prevent them from fully performing their cultural activities. One of the major obstacles is unpredictable weather conditions. Therefore, they cannot support their families from the income they earn from farming. Her Majesty also realized that traditional Thai arts and crafts, which flourished in the past, were vanishing because of the new way of life and she wished that these farmers would be able to continue the artistic heritage of the nation.
The SUPPORT Foundation is now preparing the "5th Arts of the Kingdom Exhibition" to celebrate the eightieth birthday of His Majesty the King. The artistic masterpieces on display will be nielloware, croisonne, silverware, Yanlipae basketry and utensils decorated with the wings of metal beetals. They are all created by the offspring of poor farmers. Some examples are the nielloware and croisonne Pudtan Daise (Saliang), the wooden carved Busabok pavilion decorated with five tiers, embroidery of the Himmavanta Forest and scene from The Story of Khun Cahng and Khun Phaen, depicting an image of Wan Thong, the female protagonist, engaging in embroidering, a chandelier decorated with the wings of metal beetles, a palanquin and the Suphannahong Royal Barge. The exhibition will be held in the Anatasamakom Throne Hall from December 18th, 2007 to January 13th, 2008.
